Customize Templates in Zabbix

I have Zabbix server and client .I want to customize a template , i want to monitor the status of a software which installed on my machine. I want to know the software is working now or not. For that i want to customize a template. I tried many times to customize the template , Linked the template to host , but i didn't get the correct out put. Kindly assist me
