New FAQ question

I have read the Zabbix FAQ here:

I would like to suggest that the answer to my following question be added to that FAQ.

Is there a general rule of thumb or a simplistic description of how and when changes to Zabbix settings take effect?

Say for example I adjust the interval of a trigger or I adjust an expression of one or more machines. Should the change instantly take effect presuming that the Zabbix server is properly configured, your user has the rights to do whatever it is and the Zabbix server and the monitored client(s) are not under excess load or in otherwise adverse operating conditions.

Is it necessary to "unlink and clear" a template or something like that to ensure the new Zabbix monitoring config takes effect? Let's say I make a change to a Zabbix clients templates settings and it configured to update at an hourly interval. I wait an hour or so then check the Zabbix server for the new data (Latest data for that host) but what I was expecting hasn't appeared.

I hope you can see the crux of what it is I'm trying to find the best words to ask you here. What I'd like to see added to the FAQ is a very basic desscription of how the Zabbix monitoring process works for someone who is not a Zabbix dev or an experienced Zabbix user but they're new to ZAbbix, can just about log in and add a few clients and templates and they're just trying to troubleshoot a reguar Zabbix config update / change.

This info would be incredibly useful to have as part of the Zabbix FAQ, if what I'm asking has a reasonable answer that could fit on a side of A4 tops.

Maybe the question I'm asking is "Why am I not seeing the data I expect for my host on my Zabbix server "Latest data" view after making some changes?

A Zabbix dev can no doubt refine my rough and poorly asked question but I think I've outlined my "question" more accurately now at least.

When I "Unlink and clear" a template, what exactly is getting cleared? Maybe that should be a separate question in the FAQ?

Change of item interval (because there is no trigger interval) takes effect when config cache is reloaded, IIRC. If proxies are involved, that config has to reach them also, so proxy update interval matters. And then also agent config update interval...
As triggers are recalculated, when any of used item receives new value, then change of expression takes effect right when you receive a new value to any of used items... Press save, wait until new data comes in...

It should not be required to make things work. There is also the "test now" or was it "check now" or "run now" button, that can trigger check on demand.
