Acquiring accurate inbound/outbound traffic for network switch. Update Interval.

    Hello,

I have a question about acquiring accurate inbound/outbound traffic with the default Update interval (in sec) set to (60) and how it effects dB size.

About my setup:

    Version of Zabbix: 3.2.3

I use the Template SNMP Device and apply it to my network switches. I have roughly 25 network switches mixture of 24 and 48 port. HP/Unifi. Mostly all running at gigabit with fibre only between server rooms at 10GB.

I monitor our UPSs, with a custom template. I only have 5 of those.

I also use zabbix to monitor VMs in VMware. We have 43 VMs. I use the default VMware Templates to discover and monitor our VMware environment.

    The problem:

With the default Update interval (in sec) set to (60) it misses about just under half the data with our graphs. If I set the interval to 30 - 20 seconds, I get more realistic data. Setting it to 10 is accurate. However, In my previous installations the dB went up to 20-30GB in size with a mysql and it gets quite laggy querying it. I was also housekeeping to only 30 days of data!

Example (set to 60): I know this machine caps the theoretical limit when passing data but only shows 50Mbps on the graph. I should be seeing 100Mbps and I do see that if I set the update interval to 10 seconds.

I’ve dumped my old zabbix server. Starting a new fresh one with SSDs. Any tips, please?

I'm interested in an appropriate range for items of this type. Unfortunately, my friend, I'm here to look for tips! I inherited a Zabbix with incoming / outgoing traffic items at 5s intervals!

Default template uses the 32bit counters. You need use the 64bit counters for interfaces with speed more than 100Mbps. Look for OIDs into the vendor manuals.
