zabbix template help

I have a template from a company called Tycon. Some values come in as floats, some as character. It is easy enough to assign them in the zabbix interface, but I'd think that can be defined in the template - I'm just not sure where. I haven't been able to find documentation of the template XML format.

Is there also a tag for the value's "units" (e.g. "volts") so that gets auto populated when the template is imported?

Well, I'm not sure about direct documentation of the XML template format, but it is easy enough to configure from the web interface.
