    Basic Ping for Agentless host

Hi everyone, I have been experimenting with Zabbix for a few weeks and it's by far the best thing I've come across since first discovering Nagios!

I know this has been asked a few times as I've been scouring forums on the best way to do this.

Basically, I would like to ping a WAN IP to check whether it's up or not. I do not want anything other than a simple ping. I can not seem to work out a way to add a host without having some form of agent/snmp etc so what is the best way to do this?

At the moment, I have added a host as an SNMP checked host and then adding a ICMP Ping check to the host but I dont think that's the best way.

    Can someone please advise?

    Hello!

You can try adding a new host in a separate group preferably with Agent interface pointed to 127.0.0.1:10050. If you add only ICMP ping checks there, agent will not be used in any way, therefore not involved. For the sake of tests I even pointed it agent to 216.35.2.46:10050 (random IP) and ICMP checks are still running smoothly.

This being said, I'm pretty sure your SNMP is not involved in pinging as well. But you do need a host to tie the item checks to something.

For agentless devices I want to check on, I created a new group called 'No Agent' and then just entered the IP under Agent Interfaces and assigned the template Template ICMP Ping.

The web interface is a little misleading for an agentless device: all the IP is for this kind of instance is a location for Zabbix to ping as opposed to a location it pulls any kind of data from.
