    MSSQL Server 2013 & 2016 Monitoring

    Hi Guys,

I’ve been assigned a new task to monitor MSSQL using Zabbix. Our Zabbix server is currently running on version 7.2.
From what I found on the official documentation, the MSSQL template has only been tested with MSSQL Server 2017, 2019, and 2022.

However, our production environment is still running MSSQL Server 2013 and 2016.
Has anyone tested the template with these versions or had any experience using it in a similar setup?

I’d really appreciate any input, as I want to avoid causing issues on our production servers.

    Thank you!
    Have a nice day!

The most likely errors you'll see is that some query constructs are not supported by your old servers, and they will tell you immediately without impacting performance. Zabbix will then just collect data for whatever queries do work.

If you are worried about performance then there are a few thing you can do to mitigate any adverse affects: Disable your DB host in Zabbix, as well as all items inherited from the MSSQL template, before activating your host again. This allows you to slowly activate the template features and let the discovery do its thing while easily judging the impact. If anything gets out of hand you can simply disable the entire host again.

That said, Zabbix templates are cleverly set up to only a handful of queries that return all the data needed, so manually running and testing each one is not that big a task. Look for the items that are not 'Dependent items'
