Can I modify Zabbix configuration offline?

I have an issue. I added a massive number of checks to zabbix (nearly 20k) unfortunately the settings I used means it is hammering the server that has most of these values. I immediately stopped zabbix because the server I am monitoring it very critical.

So if I start zabbix it will cause a DOS on the server again, not really an option. If I can't start zabbix how do I edit the settings of my templates so I won't cause the DOS attack?

If this checks are zabbix-agent checks, first stop the zabbix agent on this server. Or use a firewall to protect your critical server from zabbix server. After that you may start zabbix server and delete this checks.

Thanks, I realised that soon after I posted this.

That still left me wondering if it is possible to edit the configuration when the server is not running. Where is the configuration and data for zabbix actually being stored?
