Zabbix proxy database grows indefinitely

Leave a zabbix proxy standed for a while on a large network.
Observe the database grow and grow and grow indefinitely until the disk is full.
MySQL doesn't automatically reclaim disk space as you delete entries, by the way.

How to mitigate the infinite growth of the zabbix proxy database?
