    Zabbix 4 Dummies

    Hi guys, I'm a Zabbix n00b and would like a little help please.

    I have installed v1.1 onto Ubuntu server 6.10 edgy. I think it is all running OK I have been looking through threads and prefomed chmods to various folders to make sure the zabbix user can do his/her stuff.

    The bit that is confusing me is how to monitor something by simple ping test. I can add hosts and stuff but I don't really understand what an "item" or "trigger" etc are.

    Does anyone have an idiot's guide to setting up a simple ping monitor please ?

    Thank you,

    Andy.

    btw..fyi..the Ubuntu package zabbix-server-mysql doesn't install properly. After days of wondering why things were not working it turns out that the package doesn't inistall zabbix_server :/

    The script exists in /etc/init.d but the daemon is missing from /usr/sbin

      Hay ..
      Zabbix is the best, but good luck on a dummies guid, sometime i could do with one .lol

      check out the 1.4 manual, it's intended for the newer versions of zabbix, but still applies to the older verions, as far as i can see ..
      http://www.zabbix.com/downloads/ZABB...ual%20v1.4.pdf
      I have quite impressed with is ...

      In short items are the properties of the host you want to monitor, eg the item netloadin15[eth0] monitors the incomming traffic on eth0 ... etc ...etc..

      triggers are ued to generate alarms, notices when an item reaches a certien level.
      eg if the incomming data exedes a defined value on netloadin15[eth0], then the sysadmin must get an email...

      with regard to monitoring using ping this may help .. i have used it a couple of times

      Hope that helps ..

        Zabbix on Edgy

        Here is the error message from trying to install zabbix-server on Edgy:

        Reading package lists... Done
        Building dependency tree... Done
        Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
        requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
        distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
        or been moved out of Incoming.

        Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
        the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
        that package should be filed.
        The following information may help to resolve the situation:

        The following packages have unmet dependencies:
        zabbix-server: Depends: libsnmp5 (>= 5.1) but it is not installable
        E: Broken packages

        * * *

        Zabbix looks like an interesting alternative to Big Sister and Nagios, but I won't know if I can't run it.

          Followup to my own post re Zabbix on Edgy

          Installing libsnmp5 from this source allows zabbix-server to install

            Continuing to talk to myself re Edgy install

            Despite the (apparently) successful install, attempting to load the server page gets the browser error message:

            Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_pconnect() in /var/www/zabbix/include/db.inc.php on line 40

            Interestingly, Google offers one reference for this line, at the bottom of which I find:

            Possible errors

            Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_pconnect() in /var/www/zabbix/include/db.inc.php on line 40

            Solution

            you need to edit the /var/www/zabbix/include/db.inc.php file and change the settings menctioned above.

            // DATABASE CONFIGURATION

            // $DB_TYPE =”ORACLE”;
            $DB_TYPE =”POSTGRESQL”;
            // $DB_TYPE =”MYSQL”;
            $DB_SERVER =”localhost”;
            $DB_DATABASE =”osmiy”;
            $DB_USER =”eugene”;
            $DB_PASSWORD =”123″;

            I have commented out ORACLE and POSTGRESQL and uncommented MYSQL, changed $DB_DATABASE to "zabbix" and $DB_USER to "" and I get the same error message in place of the Zabbix front page. Can anyone advise?

            Thanks!

              Just to give you a ray of hope, I've had v1.1.4 running on 6.10 ubuntu for months...but it did take a little digging (thanks to the forums and google) to get it going from what I remember.
