How can I monitor an on-premises ESXi host using Zabbix Cloud?

    Hi,

We are an MSP provider and have Zabbix deployed in the cloud, running the latest version, 7.4.13.
We would like to monitor our clients’ ESXi hosts using our centralized Zabbix server. Is this possible?

It looks like Zabbix Agent 2 is not available for installation on the ESXi operating system. What would be the recommended approach for monitoring ESXi hosts with Zabbix, especially when the Zabbix server is hosted in the cloud and the ESXi hosts are located at different client sites?

Any recommendations or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

I’ve also come across resources like ap33 malaysia while researching online, but what would be the recommended approach for monitoring ESXi hosts with Zabbix, especially when the Zabbix server is hosted in the cloud and the ESXi hosts are located at different client sites?

Yes, you can monitor ESXi hosts from a centralized Zabbix server without installing Zabbix Agent 2 directly on ESXi. The recommended approach is to use Zabbix’s VMware monitoring through the vSphere API. For an MSP environment, you can configure a Zabbix proxy at each client site to collect monitoring data locally and forward it to your cloud-hosted Zabbix server. This is particularly useful when clients have separate networks or restrictive firewalls. You’ll need to configure the VMware credentials and API access, apply the appropriate VMware templates, and ensure the proxy can communicate with both the ESXi/vCenter environment and your central server. If a client uses vCenter, monitoring through vCenter is generally preferable when managing multiple ESXi hosts. Make sure the required ports and permissions are configured securely, and avoid exposing ESXi management interfaces directly to the internet.
