My first thought is to determine if a ping has not gotten a response in a given amount of time, but being new to Zabbix, I have never created a trigger. How should I create a trigger to do this?

how to create a trigger? Consult documentation? That configuration part there should be read carefully, After that you should know, what is "host", what is "item" and then how those "items" can be used in "trigger"...
It is not really a rocket surgery..
Looking at examples in OOB templates helps to understand....

Cyber,
The question was about how to create a specific trigger, not just any trigger. Finding out there was a template for ICMP Ping was what I needed. I thought I'd have to make one from scratch.
I did consult the documentation. This may come as a surprise to you, but if you are migrating from another product, like SolarWinds, like I am, the steps to take and screens to visit and the things you have to put in manually for Zabbix is a big change. I have found the Manual to be rather sparse and my best bet is to try and find a video on my specific topic. Some things I find odd in Zabbix. Like a menu item that is called Alerts when all the items in the menu are Actions. Often the manual will have documented features but not how to USE that feature. If you have been using Zabbix since it was a lot simpler and your knowledge grew with the product updates, then it all ,makes sense and you don't need examples.

Suggestion to read docs was not a try to pick a fight or be a smartass... Like a question, like an answer..
Question was, how to create a trigger and my enormous experience (joke) around this forum says, that people too often just do not care to read basics..
Based on example here, if you work out how to make an item to ping something, then you can work out a trigger expression for "ping has not gotten a response in a given amount of time". Simple and basic use case, good for learning..
