What Is The Application Framework For?

Greetings,

I have read through the source code, searched all the documentation, and have even tried creating applications, to no avail. So I have to ask, what is the applications framework for? Is it some form template? If so, it seems to be horribly broken at present. Is it supposed to be a a form of grouping items? If so, it's usefulness is questionable inside the items page, and useless outside of it.

Applications is basically a way of grouping items. New release (release 3) of PDF manual will have more details about this topic.
