    Two questions: Discovery

    Hello community!

I am new to Zabbix and i am testing it out for the company i am working in. So far i like what i see over many of the products. However there are two things which i do not seem to be able to grasp/understand.

With discovery rules i am able to set a range of IP-addresses and it picks up all the checks fine: https://ibb.co/mX31t6
However when i use the mask which is way more appealing considering how many devices run around the company; it doesn't seem to do anything? Am i missing something? I read this page quite a few times now and can't seem to figure out what i might be missing: https://www.zabbix.com/documentation...discovery/rule

Secondly; when my zabbix detects a host with agents it shows up nicely in the discovered hosts "ALL GREEN". But it doesn't seem to add them to zabbix itself. Is there an additional action required?

Hope my questions are clear and in the right section! Thanks in advance! I hope you guys can help me figure the last two steps out!

Personal note: I hope to implement this soon! I am quite enthousiastic about zabbix.

Hi and welcome to the Zabbix Community forum,

The mask option should work fine, however please note that it takes time for discovery to complete Discovery. You can check the log file for errors, typically under /var/log/zabbix/zabbix_server.log or you also can check the discoverer process in ps -aux | grep zabbix_server output.

Second question - yes, you do need an action. Check this out: https://www.zabbix.com/documentation...tion/operation

    Regards,
    Alex!

      Thanks for your response alex.

First - It seems it took six hours for the first hosts to appear. Apperently we don't use the first few 100's of adresses which explains the situation. Any way to speed this up perhaps?

second - I think i found it under actions > auto registration. It was a rather hidden menu in the top right. Tabs would be easier than a drop down menu..

I think this solves it for now. Thanks.

        Hello Ton,

The range of IP addresses for discovery. It may have the following formats:
        Single IP: 192.168.1.33
Range of IP addresses: 192.168.1-10.1-255. The range is limited by the total number of covered addresses (less than 64K).
        IP mask: 192.168.4.0/24

you mentioned in your post, first 100 adreses are not used ? then exclude them from discovery range, make it as narrow as possible to speed things up
        e.g. 192.168.0.100-255

        Regards,
        Kaspars

Yes, the discovery takes time to complete and it depends on the complexity of your rule. Which mask you are using?

The Auto registration stands for registration with an Agent already installed on the host. You need to use Actions - Discovery.

          Regards,
          Alex!

We only need detailed monitoring only on the hosts that have a agent installed. So i guess i took the right course of action

More agents will be planted over time probably.

            @kasper,
sorry i should have been more speicific. On the third number the first 10 aren't used. That is 255 x 10 adresses which it polls which don't give any response. That is why it initially took so long. Data is still coming in as we speak.

              Then its

              Code:
              192.168.10-255.0-255
              Kaspars

If the agent already installed, then you don't need to discover anything. Please read more about the Network Discovery and Active Agent auto-registration:
