Greetings,
As long as your router is configured to accept and respond to pings, then yes, it works fine.

I seem to be able to ping a device, but it seems to only whether it's up or down. How can I check the response time? Is this possible?

Hi
What item you are using?
icmpping
is used for ping check only. If you want to check response time use
icmppingsec
item.
