Help with items

Hi, iam new to zabbix, so I'm discovering. Just got it running today and added
3 hosts, 2 windows and the zabbix server itself. Read the doc version 1.4 but still I have many questions open.

First question is about Items, I have created a w32_t template that is linked to included windows_t template and added the two windows host to the former template. Is this the correct way of zabbixing?

The issue I have is about the zabbix host. I created a new linux_t template whitch is linked to Unix_t template and linked the zabbix host to this Linux_t template. So the picture is Unix_t > Linux_t > zabbixhost, then I go to items and
select zabbixhost and disable some items like IMAP, NNTP etc. But under monitoring zabbixhost still gives red on those itmes, which I thought would dissapear because I disabled them.

Can someone clue me in or point me to further in depth zabbix configuration?

figured it out.. disabled triggers for the host. guess this is the right practise.
now having difficulties creation actions. well, still exploring, else I'll be posting.
