    Newby Install Questions

I'm trying to install Zabbix on FC4, and have arrived at Steps 8-10, where I am not sure how to proceed. The documentation says to configure /etc/zabbix/ files, however there is no such directory. So I'm assuming I will need to manually create a /etc/zabbix dir.

Next I'm told to configure these files for every host, and use the example files. From the example files I'm not sure what else is needed, i.e., services, ip addresses, etc;. I've setup Nagios before and have hand created the conf files for that, but in that regard I had some frame of reference to go by. What is needed in these conf files? Can I just uncomment whats in them now and use them as a starting point?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Yeah, its very frustrating using documentation for a product that isn't complete. The later steps actually don't match the reality of the present versions. Heh, I understand the volunteer nature of FOSS projects, but your shooting your own project in the foot if the initial install documentation isn't accurate. I almost decided the project wasn't ready for actual use, and gave up on the project when I did my install. Ok, enough on that rant.

If you look in the source tarball, there is a folder with sample config files. Create /etc/zabbix on your server and copy the needed files over, and modify them for your install. The agentd.conf sample could also be used for other machines your running the agent on. Later part of the documentation explains setting up a client.

Also note, step 1 of the web front end install doesn't exist yet, or at least I couldn't find it. I had to copy the web files manually from the tarball into my web root, find the file with the database values and edit it.

      can you try gentoo Linux

      Hi,

If you are interested, I can post the gentoo linux install instructions so that
you can install gentoo linux. It is very simple and the steps are very easy
      to follow.

Once you are done with that, I can post the zabbix installation instructions
so you can follow. Again, this is so easy, thanks to James Wells for making
it easy for newbie like myself to start.

let me know if you want to proceed with it.
