The only way to do this would be via snmp. Most server hardware vendors (dell, hp, ibm etc) ship some sort of management tool with the server that in most cases will support snmp and expose counters and information about the hardware through snmp. Also some raid card vendors may have snmp tools that can be installed on the server as well.
I mucked around with this a few month ago.
I tried with the OpenManage Software for DELL and monitoring with SNMP.
For IBM-Server i installed the Director agents.
Theoreticly it works, but it is heavy to find out the right OID's. It's wasting a lot of time.
The IBM-Raidcontrollers can handle with snmp directly. But only SNMP-Traps will send when an error occurs. This is very inconvenient for testing.
IBM has a little command line tool for getting status from the RAID-Controller.
I use this tool with a little script to send the status to my zabbix server.
This works for LINUX and Windows.
It seems that DELL does not have a tool like this. Not bad for me because we only use IBM-Server for productive systems.
I have already monitored the RAID for Dell systems, that has worked quite well and was
easy to configure.
If the Dell Open Manager Agents are not already installed, install a actual version.
Change the SNMP service security settings to allow the Zabbix Server access.
Use the standard Templates delivered with Zabbix for Dell servers.
The monitoring is done by SNMP, the Dell agents are delivering the SNMP information.
I have used also the HP Insight Manager and the Zabbix Templates, that was also easy to setup.
For special controllers it might be more difficult.
I'm still searching for an 3Ware controller a solution..
I saw some tools, that are based on scripts, but I have not used it.
Also I'm searching a solution for an HP ML350 with am SmartArray E200i controller.
The standard Zabbix template will not give the RAID status.
Great! thanks, I'll look on my support CD's, I think it might be wiser to check online for the most up2date version. What do you think? Also, I'll need to locate the Linux version of that software. Thanks for your help.

I have Dell Open Manage installed and using the Dell template from the Wiki here but the Dell servers just will not work with snmp. I got our HP servers working no problem with the Template found on the wiki here. Is there anything special you did to get it working?
I am getting this error in every item. "t_DellOMGeneral:OM: Chassis Intrusion Status systemStateChassisIntrusionStatusCombined 30 7 365 SNMPv1 agent Not supported SNMP error [(noSuchName) There is no such variable name in this MIB.]"
