Ubuntu install instructions placed on Wiki

    Hi folks,

Just a quick note for those looking for installation instructions on Ubuntu, I have created a Wiki page for it. The instructions can be located at http://www.zabbix.com/wiki/doku.php?...:ubuntuinstall.

I am not taking credit for the contents. It has been compiled from a forum posting at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2956976 by bkingx and also from http://www.subvs.co.uk/server_monitoring_ubuntu_zabbix with a couple of minor notes from myself.

Please feel free to amend it if I've got anything incorrect.

Have fun with such a great product.

    Regards,
    Justin.

      Hi BlueSurfer,

I would suggest following the guide and compiling from source as it takes very little extra effort. This will ensure that you have the latest version of Zabbix. Only one step in the installation guide (the first half of step 4) and installing the dev packages are related to compiling the source, the rest of the instructions (as far as I can see) would still apply if you have a pre-compiled set of binaries.

      Regards,
      Justin.

        Hi Justin,

I'll install Ubuntu Server 7.0.4 and I need to know from where I can start.

Becouse I think that Zabbix is already included into Ubuntu Server with LAMP, but I dont know if it will be installed after system install or simply configured.

        Could you help me?

        Thank you very much!

          Hi schiinke,

After a clean Ubuntu installation, Zabbix is not installed by default. It is available from installation packages though.
The only problem is that these packages (eg. zabbix-server-mysql & zabbix-frontend-php) currently only install version 1.1.4 of Zabbix. Zabbix is currently up to version 1.4.1 so the Ubuntu packages will leave you without many of the latest Zabbix features (eg. Web monitoring).

If you want to avoid this, I would highly recommend installing Zabbix from the 1.4.1 source files. It is not really that hard if you follow the guide. You can ask questions on the forums if you get stuck.

If you need directions on installing Ubuntu itself, head over to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation which has many helpful documents available.

          Regards,
          Justin.

I've followed the instructions below 3 times, twice on a VM last time on a stand alone server.
            http://www.zabbix.com/wiki/doku.php?...:ubuntuinstall
All goes with out errors. BUT, I can not get the zabbix-server to start. I have tried starting is as root and as 'zabbix'. No log file is showing up, so I'm not sure how to trouble shoot. Database and GUI frontend look fine.

            Ubuntu 7.04
            Zabbix 1.4.2

            Thanks
            Rick

The instructions are great. one problem i noticed after messing with the startup/shutdown daemon is:

to my knowlege, v1.4.1 places zabbix_server and zabbix_agent in /usr/bin.
when i compiled v 1.4.2, those files are in /usr/sbin....

so in /etc/init.d/zabbix-server, my line now reads:
              DAEMON=/usr/sbin/${NAME}

update your /etc/init.d/zabbix-server and /etc/init.d/zabbix-agent for this path. Im still a linux noob, so i dont know the significance of this change, or if it is just a typo. But. that will make it work...

**i have edited the wiki to take this into account. someone correct me if i'm wrong**

You are absolutely right. ZABBIX 1.4.2 and future releases use sbin for binaries. The sbin seems to be more appropriate location for ZABBIX binraries.

                  Need help with Jabber

Thanks to the Wiki reference, I was finally able to see the correct package that must be installed for web monitoring to work. My only remaining issue is Jabber notifications. Does ANYONE know the correct Ubuntu 7.04 packages to install? I have already installed libiksemel1, libiksemel3, libiksemel1-dev, libiksemel-utils, and libiksemel-dev, but config still can not find the jabber libraries. I also have jabber and jabber-common installed, but to no avail. Anyone have a suggestion?

                  Thanks

                      Jabber Media Type

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at this thread, but it appears to describe a method for creating a Jabber notification using external utilities, rather than the Jabber support built in to 1.4.2. From other posts I have read, I may have to pursue this method anyway, because it seems that the built-in Jabber support only works with the jabber.org servers, which I can not access from my network.

this works on Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 for Jabber support

See this thread for the fix to get the built-in Jabber support for work with the libs iksemel that come with Ubuntu:

Been meaning to post back. I have followed your install notes a couple of times now and each time have got Zabbix up and running with very little effort.

Its this kind of documentation that really helps people new to Linux and of course Zabbix get up and running. I have installed and reinstalled linux and zabbix god knows how many times but each time i am learning something new.

It is a big learning curve when coming from a Windows environment.

PS i just love Ubuntu server it really does rock!

                          Thanks again for the documentation

                          Craig
