    mysql sleep connections

hey guys, great product! spent yesterday reading/installing ... I am sold, i think nagios and cacti will get scratched

question... i see a ton of sleeping mysql connections...and before increasing the max_connections in my.cnf to 500, the connection pool to mysql would fill up
why is this happening? does zabbix open a separate mysql connection for each check?
    mysql server 5.0.41
    zabbix 1.4.1

    THANKS!

ZABBIX does not require more than N+M database connections where:

N - number of ZABBIX server processes (zabbix_server)
M - number of connections from PHP (configured in php.ini)

N+M is normally limited by a constant value. You may require no more than 50, maximum 100 database connections, depending on size of ZABBIX setup.
