    Need help configuring snmp devices

I was thinking that it would be very helpfull to have a walkthrough on how to configure your own SNMP devices.

I am really exited about the increased ammount of templates for SNMP devices. But I havent found much help for how configure others.

Much of the SNMP information i have found is somewhat overwhelming and does not help me directly with how to configure ZABBIX snmp.

For example, I want to monitor usage on a switch port. The snmp template with zabbix shows octets on each port. could I just change the interval to 60 seconds and do some math to determine bits/second?

what i have done so far is use snmpwalk -c <community name> <ip>. That gives me some data.

Does anyone know how to make it usefull?
What about MIB's? are they necessary to import? seems like they translate addresses into word values (kind of like dns does for IP's)
