Accessing the raw data in zabbix

Is there a way to get access to the raw data in zabbix via an API or similar? I want to process the data in ways that zabbix currenlty doesnt handle and am looking at some kind of business intelligence interface to do it.

A very good project called "PHPMyAdmin" works very well for accessing the raw data in a mysql database...

yep, but I would need the root password as well as the table structure and field relationships in order to successfully use the zabbix db's to create reports in another app.
