Call for discussion on ZABBIX 1.8

Hello,

Maybe it has already been asked for but I would find useful to add an optional "description" field for each item. It could be used to explain the different values that can be retrieved.

For example, I've used the APC_Battery template and I get the "APC Battery Status item" (upsBasicBatteryStatus).

Currently, its value is 1 and it should be ok (no trigger activated) but it could be more readable.

Good news, this feature already exists. You can configure these values in Configuration --> General --> Value Mapping.
And then change each Configuration -- > Item to the appropriate 'value map'.

The status of the UPS batteries:

1 = Unknown
2 = Battery Normal
3 = Battery Low


Note: The enumeration 'Battery Low' (3) indicates that the UPS will be unable to sustain the current load, and its services will be lost if power is not restored.

Suggestion on V1.8 features

Dear Alex,

I really love the V1.6.1 release. After playing around Zabbix, Nagios, Cacti, Zenoss,
Zyrion, HP OV, Lucent VitalSuite, Uptimesoftware.com , I would like to suggest
the improvements of Zabbix over the following area:

a)Graph Template (different Parameters over same graph for the
same device type) (As in Cacti)

b) WeatherMap (As in Nagios, Cacti)

c) Customizable Reporting Generation (Date, Device,Service, Service group)
e.g. Availability report, SLA report (As in Cacti, VitalSuite)

d) Schedule/Maintanance Period for SLA/Downtime calculation
(As in Zenoss, VitalSuite)

e) More Pre-defined/Enhanced Agentless Application Performance (Resonse time) Monitoring
(Similiar to Web Appplication scenario/steps but extend to other applications, e..g. DNS, SMTP, etc.)
e.g. Response time in DNS Query, SMTP, POP3, HTTP, HTTPS,LDAP that can be broken down in Server Time,
Network time and client time (As in VitalSuite, Zyrion). By checking TCP SYN and TCP SYN-ACK packets
delay, we can able to find the network time.

f) Customize DashBoard for different User/Group (different default Map,Screen)
Server/Network Admin: Individual Server/Network parameters mesaurement,
downtime.

Server/Network Manager: Overall/Aggregate Server/Network devices health
status, HA Status

IT Manager/CIO : Services availablity and SLA calculation


g) Enhanced File Log Monitoring by providing API of Zabbix to be used by other log monitor tools
e.g. Using Zabbix API from sec.pl or swatch and zabbix_sender.

I am using this approach and bypass the limitation of the speed and line limit of Zabbix.
If there is some APIs by Zabbix, I can make the process more direct and effective.


Just thinking of the above at this moment.

Long SMS Capability

I'd like to see long SMS capability. Currently, when message over 200 character it will show an error as follow:

Expected [+CMGS: ] received [+CMS ERROR: other error]

you can categorize this request as "Nice to have" not Urgent

I would definitely like to see vmware API support in zabbix that is supported in zenoss. This will automatically discover VMware servers using the VMware API, so that you still need not install a monitoring agent.

Also a Reporting feature that allows you to generate utilization data in Excel, pdf or graphs formats. I understand graphs are already supported.

Feature Development Control

so, the idea here is - gather feature ideas on the wiki. as mentioned there, describe each feature as much as possible, so that if a company/individual comes along and wants to fund/develop a feature from that list, they can just grab that spec & get to the work.

I second this, richlv! I believe it would contribute greatly to organizing user development efforts.
Also, I can see where an API would be better than my plugin module for Discover feature suggestion, it would streamline external coding efforts that all could enjoy and each could be certified separately, and kept in a certified area for download.

Email notification with multiple recipients would be handy for knowing the proper people where notified. The only downside, it would make a mess of the Notifications page unless the addresses were consolidated ONLY at send, and not stored consolidated in the Notifications DB table.

Perhaps this thread should be turned into a wiki? Given that everybody's got something to say about everybody's ideas, a wiki would be a good format for discussing new ideas; the linear nature of a forum thread makes it difficult to follow different 'branches' of ideas.

Page refresh

When a page refreshes during an update or as a item is changed (enabling or disabling an item) the page redraws and goes back to the top. Is it possible to make the page update, but remain in the same position when you clicked the on it? Also, I noticed the graphs when you are connected as guest during a redraw reset back to the default 1 hour time frame and the current date. If you happen to be trying to set you time frame during the update it clears the window and you have to start over.

Updating template items

Is it possible to ask if you want an updated items monitor status to be updated across all host using the template?
My template for windows has all the drive letters from c-z in for monitoring and all except for C are disabled by default. Last week I went in and updated the templates for drive free space monitoring in windows and ended up disabling all my drive monitoring because of the template update. When you update a template item can you include an extra button or check box to include the item status with the template change. Basically if it is disabled in the template and enabled on the host to leave it enabled on the host when you change some other aspect of the item.

in 1.6 and trunk item states should not be updated for linked items unless you explicitly change it.

I am running 1.6.1. I know the only thing I changed in this case was the item title and clicked save.

"not supported" trigger

Allow for a trigger to notify when an item goes from active to "not supported".
Here is the background on my request. I have a couple windows performance monitors that are from a in house application. Every so often they go into "not supported" status and I haven't found a way to alert when this happens.

Also, a similar trigger for when a host goes to unavailable would be nice as well.

haven't read all the posts, but would like to be able to stop/start the server service from the web UI. stopping the service allows for faster 'mass updates'.
