Hi, everyone.
I work for a medium sized ISP in the state of Florida and recently began to tinker around with Zabbix after reading an article about it in Linux Magazine.
We currently are in charge of the FIRN network and we also have many commercial customers for which we provide VPN tunnels, bandwidth, and many other services.
I am in the process of converting many of our production servers from a BSD platform to Debian GNU/Linux and so this has been a good time to look at possible alternatives for our current monitornig systems. We currently employ an ancient version of Nagios for host / network monitoring and notification. For utilization graphing (which we must provide to our customers), we use in-house code that uses RTGraph on the backend. Since we are often working with various phone companies, we also have a second database that is customized to contain site contact information, circuit ID's, serial numbers, addresses, etc. for routers, switches and other equipment across the whole state of Florida.
I would love to combine all three of these things.
After playing around with Zabbix for a bit, I'm a firm believer that it can handle the first two tasks easily; monitoring & notification and utilization graphs.
I saw this thread:
where an individual was asking about a similar ability to enter hardware and contact information along with a host. That thread was dated some time ago and I was just curious about an update.
I don't think it would be difficult for me to modify the php front-end and the schema definitions to allow a free form comments field and/or fields such as address, site contact, etc. that can be entered along with other host information. I would prefer, however, not to bastardize an installation of Zabbix into something custom. Any thoughts? Thanks!
