looking at history and trend data

Ok I've been learning zabbix and each element I need. Asking questions and getting answers that are better than my questions actually. The last real blind spot is about looking at history and trend data. I thought as I looked around the forum and read more it would become clear. But I really have not found anything.

Is it just raw SQL queries against the zabbix database?
Is there a bunch of sample queries available. i'm not much of a pure mysql person so figuring out what is what will be a pretty hard slog. Amy I missing something obvious?

That's the primary storage mechanism for Zabbix, unlike say RRDtool.

What is it that you're actually looking for? I assume you've already looked at the source code?

I'm looking for a couple sql samples queries I can clone. So if I see a problem with a deveic I can run a query that give me some readable history or trend. Nothing magic .. just something that makes keeping the history and trend data worthwhile.

The alert templates can include a variety of data, so you might be able to get some trend info on the alert email.

I'm not really an SQL person so I think I would like to get our sql apps people to work on pulling the real data. I believe you hinted earlier where I might find the data formats for the history data and trend data. Or will they be able to figure that out from the zabbix database schema? AS I said this is not my area of knowledge.

What is it that you're actually looking for? I assume you've already looked at the source code?

Ok I did go back into the schema and have been running queries. What I'm not understanding is how to correlate itemid in history to itemid in trends to hostid in hosts . Or what ever the relationship is. If I had that I would like to build a php screen to summarize the data for a particular host.

I looked for some doc on this and continue to run queries t see if I get some inspiration but if someone could enlighten me it would be much appreciated.
