Why is "Application" not defined globally?

I'm fairly new to Zabbix but anytime I'm creating a new template I stumble
accross the problem that "Applications" are bound to either host or template.

I would prefere to have them defined/configured "globally".

    Why?

Imagine the situation that you are defining different Templates, for example
for backup, for web-applications, and and and... each template defines an
Item for a "process-check", one Item for a service-state and so on...

Wouldn't it be fine to see then the process-check under Application "Processes"
    and the service-state under "Services"?

But with the current implementation (1.8.2) this is not possible (if I'm right
it was in the past.... why has this been changed?)

    Thanks,
    Christian

Oh yeah, great idea! Several times I had the same need as you Just4fun.

We discussed this issue some time ago, and that was my point to make apps global. But I didn't managed to convince my colleges to make this change, there were some cons.. May be I should try again some day

        Hi Aly,

would be fine if you could try to convince the other developers

I've done now my first steps in Zabbix, at the moment about 60 hosts
monitored with about 3000 active and lots of inactive items... which I definitly
don't like (you never know whether the inactive items are intent to be inactive
for a host or if they have been temporarily deactivated or deactivated by accident...)

So I came to the idea to split my templates into smaller pieces (e.g. one for
"web server", one for "samba", and so on). But this leads now to the fact that
each of these small templates describe their own "Service"- or their own
        "Performance"-Application..... and now I'm stuck...

I think it would be very very great (and welcome by many others) if either
Applications would be defined globally or at least could have the same name
in different templates (used for one host).......

          Hi,

I have exactly the same experience as just4fun.

We have decided to use smail templates that allow us to easily setup a new host by linking appropriate templates. We can have more than 20 templates linked to an host.

For instance, for Web services, we have these templates:
          • Check that port 80 is open
          • Check that port 443 is open
          • Check that SSL certificate is valid
          • Collect performance statistics from Apache logs

Depending on actual host setup, we may link only some of them (if port 443 is not used or Web server is not Apache).
I would love to associate all those templates to a single "Web service" application but it is not possible.

          Regards,

AS I remember the main problem was with permissions. If apps will be global, then creating applications would be possible only by super admin.. and ALL applications would be seen by any user. This can create a messy setup.

From other sides the idea looks good

I have registered a feature request for global level applications in Zabbix bug and feature request tracking system. You can vote for the implementation of this feature here: ZBXNEXT-1370.

1370 is closed as a dupe of 928 in Jira so you want to vote for ZBXNEXT-928 instead.
