although some things take more time, i'd like to hope that overall it is improving.

As a member of this community for many years I can say unequicably this this is the case. I must also say Richlv, you have played a big part in that. I know Alexei tried his best in this area but he had a lot on his plate and having someone to delegate some community aspects to has helped.

on the other hand, there's this circle of not investing lots of time and resources into what might not pick up. for example, look at just a handful of people commenting on 2.0 documentation thread, and there doesn't seem to be a huge enthusiasm in writing the docs - which is understandable, as that is hard and everybody has lots of other things to do already...

The hard part is that documentation is an arc of sorts. It starts with a design document, then there is the building process, and finally there is the end user documentation. How are we supposed to know what to document when it's kinda hard to figure out what it was *supposed* to do. Sure we can document what it does, but what if there is a bug inherent in it not doing what it was supposed to do? This is an issue I firmly place at the feet of the developers. I've said it before and I'll say it again... help us to help you make Zabbix more awesome (Write some design documentation please!)

hopefully, taking some simple and small steps will help, and maybe we all will see some of those in near future

it would sound a bit repeating, but again, i fully agree. sometimes we end up with features that nobody remembers anything about. after a while some developer can figure out what it does by reading code... but nobody is really sure whether that's correct or even why is it done that way in the first place

but i'd guess it is one of those things that hopefully will slowly improve over time

True, it does sound repetitive, but overall it really isn't, since most of the heavy lifting of sorts is done up front. The only way to do this is if a supervisor or manager cracks the whip with regards to documenting up front. Programmers often don't like to write documentation, or in the case of the Zabbix source, informative comments...

I am absolutely with you. It is in interest of all of us to keep it publicly available. Please give us a few days, I am sure it will appear on our website very soon.

I was looking back through some old posts and I was curious if there has been anything new with regards to a roadmap for future versions? I dug around and didn't find anything aside from the old forum thread regarding 1.8 (which is pretty unwieldy to follow).

zabbix 2.0 roadmap

a bit rough draft version which should be improved, but should give a general idea. community involvement welcome - linking to issues on the tracker, improving wording etc

the roadmap is not all-inclusive - there have already been a few smaller changes not listed there developed. most of these should be listed in the 2.0.0 whatsnew page at http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/...on/whatsnew200

Still no meta data support for hosts and items. I guess once people are used to filtering on basic criteria and using LLD and other fonctions they will understand how useful and enlightening meta data becomes.
