    First choice Opensource NMS

    Hi ,Alex:

Thanks for provide a perfect opensource nms!
I have tested this system for about 2 month, from belta2 to belta6, every upgrades will bring me so many surprise!

And now I have a little question:
when can this project integrate following two main features:
    1.network or service auto discovery
    2.remote command ?

may be it's too hard to implement these features for an open source project, but i think maybe users can pay for these important features if this project need, in order to provide more reliability and rich features.

BTW: I don't understand why this project will be freezed, if so, then how can we do? shall we add features by ourself?

    Thank you very much!

A feature freeze doesn't mean that there will never be added new features to zabbix.
It is simply a part of the development process, after going through alpha, beta and going for stable at some point development must announce feature freeze in order to bugfix and secure the code.
Then in the next release cycle (1.2?) there will be alpha, beta stages for adding features and experimenting with the code base and at last a feature freeze for delivering stable code.
This is a very poor description of software development but you'll get the picture

      1. What kind of autodiscovery you'd like to see in ZABBIX? By IP range? Network topology? ICMP pings? Discovery of services?
      2. Planned for the next beta, hopefully will be released in 1.1.

The feature freeze will be for 1.1 only. We have no plans to stop development of ZABBIX!

My simple idea for Auto Discovery

        Hi: Alexei!

ok, I see. I'm very glad that this project will release product version 1.1, thanks a lot!

        For autodiscovery, My understand is:
We may provide a discovery wizard to find or create hosts and items, maybe following this process order:

        1. At first we may discovery all living hosts(with IP address) by using IP range, or through SNMP, fetch the route tables of gateways to get them.

        2. The second we may create a host status table just name as hosts_status(which include these fields: IP address, snmp_support, agent_support, simple_support), try to detect wheather zabbix_agent running on these hosts or not, record the agent_status field of hosts_status ; Then try to detect the support of SNMP for these hosts, also we may record the snmp_status field of hosts_status; Of course, the field of simple_status will be setting true as default for all IP address.

        3. The third, we may use the right template for agent or snmp or simple to detect the host using IP address to find all support items on this host.

        4. Finally, we can select all the items need to be monitoered add to this host.

All the detection may be background process , we need sometime to refresh the GUI to see the result.

That's a simple idea of mine, please consider it, and provide your smart advice.

        Thanks!
