    Monitoring page suggestions

It would be very useful for our organization if the Monitoring Overview page was more customizable. Specifically it would be nice to see something like the Tactical Overview screen in Nagios.

The ability to show all hosts, or all host groups would also be beneficial. The only way I've been able to show all host data is to include all hosts in a group I made called "All".

Being able to select what shows up on the Overview screen by default would also be useful.

This has been discussed before (search archive for my Thoughts from a Nagios user thread).

I think the two overview screens (triggers and data) could actually be merged into one screen where the triggered data cells would be white (no trigger), green (trigger FALSE) or red (trigger TRUE). Clicking the data in the cell would bring to the corresponding trigger detail screen. I currently switch between the two all the time and this would make me alot more productive.

One crazy idea would be to use AJAX to have a mouseover popup that would allow a link to the trigger or a link to the corresponding graph.

I still believe something has to be done to replace the "..." overview screen with something a bit more telling. Maybe a grid that shows all hosts on the Y axis and their items on the X axis (with the different colors like above?)

I still do not see how information about, say, 1000 hosts can be displayed in one 1024x768 screen. What information you'd like to see in the screen? Everything in "Latest values" plus everything in overview? I don't think it is possible. Kind of latest values highlighting and showing TRUE triggers only?

Anything else? Please be more specific. I'd appreciate a screenshot or a sketch

        Screenshots

Does someone have a running NAGIOS system to provide Alexei with some reference to what we're talking about? I'm not running NAGIOS here anymore, and the site at www.nagios.org strangely doesn't have a screenshot of the "Tactical Overview" screen.

As for me, I would appreciate the ability to show ALL hosts, regardless if it scrolls off the screen. Also the ability to show items - for example, if I had checks for SMTP and HTTP, and all I want to see is servers with those items on the overview screen.

the only way I could see something like this working would be in a grid layout "periodic table" style where cells changed colors depending on status and background colors indicaed host groups. mouseover would provide more info

It would still be more of a technical user's view, but for senior admins I could see value in it

dynamic list of hosts with interesting data

One way to get around the problem of having 1000s of hosts on one page is to dynamically list the hosts with any data of interest at the top. I'd also leave in a scrollable list of all hosts, but this would allow the admin some efficiency of dealing with some problems first, as they'd be at the top. Any all green hosts wouldn't be interesting and can be hidden for the time being.

Another consideration is about host grouping.. and how those would move dynamicaly, if more than one group of hosts were down, and therefore interesting to look at.. perhaps move them as a group... and hopefully they're not as large as to make the other group that has hosts of interest on the next page and not visible..

I suppose if there are that many hosts that need attention, you have much bigger problems ;-/
