Currently, Applications can't be defined globally. The reason you'd want this is best explained in this thread: http://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17594
I'm in the exact same boat as the people in that thread. I want to split up my templates. Example: Template for Exchange 2010 might have applications for services and availability. This template would be applied to servers running Exchange 2010. The server's other template might be "Windows Server 2008 R2" which would also have applications for services and availability. I think the benefits of this are pretty clear - better control of templates.
Based on the replies in the thread I linked above, it sounds like there was a security concern with global applications. I propose the following feature to give us similar functionality with (possibly) no security problems:
Allow hosts to be linked to templates that contain the same application names. Obviously the application names must be exactly the same in each template.
Example:
When viewing this host in Zabbix we would see both applications listed once and they would contain the items defined in each of the templates. Think of them more as "tags" than the traditional application. Perhaps there could also be a checkbox on the template definition to either allow or disallow this behavior, for those who don't want it.
Would love to see this or something like it.
Thanks,
Brent

Example:
- Template named "Windows Server" defines applications "Services" and "Performance"
- Template named "Exchange Server" defines applications "Services" and "Performance"
- Host "Server123" is linked to both of these templates
