We developed Zabbix Sender as Windows Service especially for sending "heartbeats" to the Zabbix Server. Using the "normal" zabbix_sender from a script which is controled by automated tasks is not very reliable. (Problem with reliability is the Automated task, not the zabbix sender we are using)
It is developed in .net, so it requires the .net framework (but this should be no problem on most windows 2003 systems). It has been tested on 2003 Standard, Enterprise and Small Business, as well as on Windows 2000 Server and XP
Configuration is done with the file zabbixsender.exe.config in the program directory. Configuration Options are easy to understand.
Right now, it is only possible to configure one item and one host, but this should by enough for heartbeats.
If anyone is interested i can send the sources, too
