How about setting up a crowdsourced development model for Zabbix - so new features can be developed by many users paying only a little..... ?
Right now - if want a new feature in Zabbix - say syslog support (for my many clients who use Cisco) - I would have to pay for the whole feature development myself. But there are probably lots of other people who would want that feature too... so why not share the cost ? Our friends in Zabbix get the cashflow they for their business - and we all get more features - faster...
How would this work ?
Zabbix or the users sets a wish list of new features.
Zabbix indicate how much each facility would cost (realistically)
Users can then bid or pledge small amounts towards this.
Once the target amount is reached - we pay up and the Zabbix developers start coding :-)
eg (some wild suggestions)
Syslog support : development cost 5000 Euros - 100 donations of 50 Euros needed
Chinese language support : development cost 50000 Euros - 1000 donations of 50 Euros needed
The beauty of this is that it fits the spirit of open source - where many support for the benefit of all.
Hopefully see you at the Zabbix 2013 Conference !
