Crowdsourced Development - We all contribute a little for new Zabbix features...

How about setting up a crowdsourced development model for Zabbix - so new features can be developed by many users paying only a little..... ?

Right now - if want a new feature in Zabbix - say syslog support (for my many clients who use Cisco) - I would have to pay for the whole feature development myself. But there are probably lots of other people who would want that feature too... so why not share the cost ? Our friends in Zabbix get the cashflow they for their business - and we all get more features - faster...

    How would this work ?
Zabbix or the users sets a wish list of new features.
Zabbix indicate how much each facility would cost (realistically)
Users can then bid or pledge small amounts towards this.
Once the target amount is reached - we pay up and the Zabbix developers start coding :-)

    eg (some wild suggestions)

Syslog support : development cost 5000 Euros - 100 donations of 50 Euros needed
Chinese language support : development cost 50000 Euros - 1000 donations of 50 Euros needed

The beauty of this is that it fits the spirit of open source - where many support for the benefit of all.

Hopefully see you at the Zabbix 2013 Conference !

Why minimum donation of 250 Euros ?

Thanks for point out the development services page. I completely missed this - but there again I'm fairly new to the Zabbix project...

Most visitors probably head straight for the forums - so adding a link there might be useful.....

Regarding the development services - I tried hitting the contribute button for the limited number of projects, and the dialog box mentions a minimum donation of 250 Euros ? Why not 10 Euros minimum (paypal anyone?), and much wider list of ideas so users can support where their priorities are ?

According to the forum stats - Zabbix has 12,000 registered members - If all 12,000 donated just 10 Euros - that would mean 120,000 Euros for development.
I'm just suggesting a more flexible support approach.

Zabbix - brilliant piece of work. Enough said.

        Thanks for that.

I checked out the contribution page but it's aimed at larger donations - 500 Euros +

I think there is an opportunity if more fundable options were available at a cheaper contribution - say 10-50 Euro - via paypal ?

Zabbix - brilliant project - enough said.

I think sponsoring is more addressed to enterprise users.
The fee sounds reasonable and fair to me in relation to creating a forecast about effort and time.

Anyway I agree with you. It would be really nice to have some kind of donation for sponsoring that maybe would allow using Bitcoin, PayPAL,...

          - Sponsoring is "just" a commitment to pay if founded
          - A donation for sponsoring would be an irrevocable transfer irrespective of whether founded or not

I don't know if there are a lot of people out there, who were willing to make a donation without any guarantee.
I for my part, would have got rid for a couple of hundred bucks this way :-)

Would certainly work for us, even on a recurring basis, like $100, $250, + per month though how to dedicate to a given feature, project, etc. ? Almost have to have a function of the feature system where we all bid on features, like I'd pay $500 towards this feature, and if others also pay enough, it has $5000 and gets done, that sort of thing.

We'd pay thousands per year for this sort of thing, though if we pay for features ourselves, any one of the costs many thousands and we'd only get one per year.
