Ping from (windows based) host (agent)

I'd like to see a feature for the Zabbix agent where we can ping other systems from a Windows host. This way we could show the latency and packet loss of a link between two hosts in the map view.
There is a feature request to add ping in the agent, it was opened in 2011: https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-739

Does anyone know of a template or scripts which adds this functionality for Windows hosts?

You can do this if you call powershell from the agent to ping something.

Is there a way to do this without involving Powershell? It's quite a resource hog, even for something simple as doing a ping..

Yes, of course ping is an absolute basic step in every professional monitoring setup - of course you then add more checks on top of that, but pinging across your hosts gives you very important information about the basic network connectivity. it is unfortunate that Zabbix does not support such a basic feature on the agents out of the box https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-739] - please vote for that feature request! Zabbix server can ping!

It helps to understand what ping really does:
How does the ping command really work? Specifically where does the ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) come into picture? I was asked this question in an interview and I was not able to come up wi...
