    More complicated please

Hi...this post is being created after spending the last 4 hours trying to get even the smallest bit of joy out of Zabbix, but as yet, nothing...so feel free to throw this post in the trash and mutter offensive things about the idiot trying to get Zabbix working.

My question though...is...if you could make Zabbix any more complicated configure, how would YOU do it?

I have installed Zabbix on Ubuntu 12.4 and have been trying to configure it to show me the traffic (or ANYTHING at all) on the Managed switch it is plugged into.
I did initially try the firewall, but as yet have not been able to get the MiB for it (Sonicwall NSA 220), and Zabbix is pretty bend on forcing me to give the most intricate details about where to find the information I want.

So I resorted to this pretty simple switch, and it has a simple SNMP v1 v2 and v3 setup, even shows me the OIDs to use.

I have tried plugging lots of things into Zabbix, but wow, what a mission.

I have tried the help, followed what I could, but unless you are connecting to the agent, I fall off the wagon pretty fast.
Everyone tells me to just use the SNMP Template...BUT HOW!!!

I clone it, edit it, attach to host, now what, where does it show me the output, where does it show me anything other than the configuration of items, and templates and hosts etc.

Oh well, maybe I am just not cut out for this Zabbix thing. It sounded so promising too. Time to go home for a beer.

Thank you dearest Zabbix for making me feel so very stupid.

    Take it easy.
Everyone after first day with Zabbix had feeling that he is unbelievably stupid and had to kill himself to save the mankind from increasing stupidity.

After reading a tons of FAQ and manuals and watching Training video we can start to understand what kind of magic works inside of Zabbix code.

For your situation (monitoring of SNMP switch) I would like to ask you to take a look on documentation which describe (almost) your case.
It named "Low-level Discovery: Discovery of SNMP OIDs"

And if you would like it, you can take a next "baby step" to Discovery of nodes using SNMP + Adding a Discovery action:

I hope you feel yourself better now after yesterdays beer and pizza.

    Cheers!
    Sincerely yours,
    Aleksey

      ehm PEBCAK ?!

in hosts configure the SNMP-IP (normaly the IP from the Switch) go to templates and add SNMP devices.. and wait one hour.. and you will see you switch

you also can change the discovery time for the Switchports (normaly its one hour)..

i think thats very simple and its not magic stuff..
