    Zabbix Virtual Appliance

Has anyone looked at creating a Zabbix Virtual Appliance? With Zabbix moving closer to Distributed Monitoring having a Zabbix Virtual Appliance ready to install and configure on a Windows machine in an all Windows enviroment would make distribution of Zabbix so much easier.

    Cheers,

There are a couple of VM Appliances on the vmware.com site that include Zabbix. I don't know the name of it off the top of my head, but we used one for a very short while. Unfortunately, I was never able to find the username/password combination to log into the Zabbix portion, but it was there.

Right now, though, I would wait for 1.4 to come out. Then, if you want, you could always build a VM around it for your network. That way it's customized the way you would like it to be setup.

I have created a Zabbix Virtual Appliance and is available at Mikoomi.com.
I intend to keep on improving the appliance and adding more "monitoring capabilities/agents" to it.
In this initial version here's what you get in the appliance -

      - Zabbix 1.8 (with a small fix from 1.8.1 that fixes a bug in template import)
      - Ubuntu LAMP 9.10 (Karmic)
      - DB2 Express-C (Free DB2 edition) -for DB2 monitoring

The web-site had download for the appliance as well as flash videos for setup and configuration (which is minimal).

Some of the "enhancements" that I have done include a weekly maintenance that does MySQL datafile optimization, seperating the different tables into their own tablespaces, keeping all the binaries, configuration, log and other files under /home/zabbix.

Since this is in the US and the Virtual Appliance is about 3.7 GB, I think it might be easier to make it available "closer" to other sites, say in Europe.

Will appreciate any feedback that you can provide regarding the appliance.

Sorry, the appliance was not available for quite some time at www.mikoomi.com due to bandwidth constraints.

I have been finally able to find a place to host the appliance !

You can find it at ftp://ftp.mikoomi-downloads.com

You can download the files using zabbix / z@bb1x

I will appreciate any feedback that you can provide.....

        Thanks for your patience,

        Jayesh

I am in the process of downloading now and will let you know the outcome. I am most appreciative of people like yourselves who are willing to share their skills and creations with the rest of us.

          Regards. poch.

I had tried a few times to download and extract this with both WinRAR and WinZip. I think that the archive is corrupt? Would you be able to create the archive files again or post the full files?

            Many thanks.
            Regards.

Sorry I should have more instructions.

Once you download the files, "concatenate" (cat) them into a single file.
That file is a gzipped tar file.

I just carried out the action on my source files, and it seems to be fine.

              $tar zvtf test.tar.gz
              -rwx------ jthakrar/???????? 3697008128 2010-02-09 09:41 Mikoomi.vmdk
              -rwx------ jthakrar/???????? 4784 2010-02-09 13:35 VMWare-Mikoomi-Monitoring.ovf
              -rwx------ jthakrar/???????? 5075 2010-02-09 13:34 Virtualbox-Mikoomi-Monitoring.ovf

I used "split" to split the single gzipped file into several files to ease the upload/download process.

Let me know if you still face problems.

Once you download the files and concatenate them (make sure you binary concatenate them on Windows), you need to untar and gunzip the files.

To do so, you will need a utility like tar on your machine.

I have tar and other utilities on my Windows as part of the cygwin open source software, but I am sure there are others also.

                  Hope that works for you......

Apologies to everyone who may have downloaded the files from the ftp site, got the VM up and running but were having problems after going through the setup.

Essentially, there was a bug in the setup script which caused the network configuration file to be faulty.

Below is a sample of how a good Ubuntu network configuration file should look like.

The "fault" would most likely cause your VM not to boot up after running through the setup. So you will have to either disable your network interface or re-import the appliance.

Once you have done the above, either you can edit your network file generated by the setup.sh script manually or replace the setup.sh script with the attached file (the file is called setup.sh.txt - copy it to your virtual machine and rename it to setup.sh and also set execute permissions on the file).

                      User / Password

I've downloaded your appliance last week, but I can't login
Your swf tells me to use: zabbix / mikoomi - but this combination
                      doesn't work for me

                      Any help would be appreciated

                        Hi Tipe,

                        Thanks for downloading the appliance.

The password is mik00mi (it is zero) - try that and it should work.

I am working on putting it into a single file and easier to download (no ftp, just http, etc.).

                        Good Luck,

The VMware appliances you linked to are well dated, yes. In fact I tried the rPath one despite its version as I was having difficulty building my own. Fortunately I came across jthakrar's version which is a 1.8 version and its running very well so far.

                            Regards.

                              Hey there,

If that's help I just publish an appliance there : http://www.applianceslinux.fr
Website is in French but I'm sure you'll find it easily.

                              You'll find a zabbix-mysql 1.8.2 server on 16Gb thin hard drive.
Vmware package or live-cd are available to download.
Vmware image must be converted in order to be used on ESX and the vmdk run really fine on kvm or virtualbox.

Don't forget to fit the size of memory to your need there is no swap partition!

                              Regards
