while reading the source I found out that zabbix web interface checks zabbix server daemon status via ps command – most bizarre way I think. isn't it more secure and proper to do this check via process pid ?

You are absolutely right. Remember that the front-end can run on a different physical box, which makes check of PID quite difficult though.

ZABBIX 1.6 will check availability of ZABBIX server by making a connection to servers trapper process.
