Reinstall without losing MySQL data? Fedora 8/9 related

I recently upgraded to Fedora9 from Fedora8 using preupgrade.

Either the upgrade itself or something I did afterwards seems to have broken the ability of Zabbix to write to the MySQL database.

When I finished the upgrade, the next time I logged into Zabbix it sent me to the initial configuration Wizard. Unfortunately, I was juggling a few other things while doing this, and after several attempts to run through the wizard were unsuccessful, I made changes to the passwords for my MySQL users and a few other things which seem to have satisfied the wizard.

Now Zabbix appears to be running OK, but I can't see historical data for anything that is being monitored.

I'm not asking to have a solution handed to me on a plate, but I'm just not really sure where to go from here. I have not yet tried adding new items or modifying existing items to validate my theory of a problem communicating with MySQL.

I'm leaning towards doing an uninstall and reinstall of Zabbix, but I'm not sure how best to go about this if my goal is to preserve the data in MySQL and fix the ability of Zabbix to connect to it. I'm also not sure if there is some other route I should take in trying to fix this before giving that a try.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Joe

do you have a mysql backup?
    Do the logs say anything?
can you query the database on the console as user zabbix? If so, can you find out if the historical data is still in the DB and zabbix has written any new values?
did you compile zabbix by yourself? If so, did you ./configure it correctly?
    Big ZABBIX is watching you!
