I am really struggling with ZABBIX 1.4.2 on Ubuntu Desktop 8.04. I have gone through the entire install process following this method:

After I did the install with NO errors I then go onto the frontend and do the entire login & registering process. Then I go to Zabbix status and it says "Zabbix server running NO" My friend did a ZABBIX install on CentOS. He had the exact same problem. i don't know which version of ZABBIX he has used. Neither of us followed the same installation process. When I did a ps -aux|grep zabbix-server or a ps -aux|grep zabbix_server I didn't get any response of a server running.
I am at my wits end and really don't know what to do anymore. I need to get this up and working and would really appreciate any help to resolve this issue.
The next problem I noticed is when I am on the frontend and I select the queue option and from the drop down list select details, I get a date that reads 01.01.1970 12:00:00. how can I fix that? Do I need to clear a log file, or do I need to edit a file?
