... on average every 2nd call I make they cannot find my support contract and I have to wait half the day for them to call me back
Yeah, I've heard that one. Be sure you tell them so, and ask why they took so long. The person you are speaking to may be powerless to answer (e.g. it might be me), so you need to encourage them to relay the question to the right people.

I guess I would not like to be in their shoes trying to work out issues, I think I would go mental
Just have to have endless patience.

Anyway, this has made me look at Zabbix sources. Fascinating.

Fill us in on what you are working on? What does HP use to monitor its resources?

What HP uses to monitor ... I've no idea. The people doing it don't talk to me about it, and don't need to. Huge organisation.

What I'm working on when I'm not doing customer calls ... open source and Linux professional development, certification, communication, rewards for participation. Identifying open source projects, matching needs to projects.

What I'm working on when I'm not at work ... the One Laptop Per Child charity, Netrek, pptp, pptpd, amateur radio, electronics, and a heap of other stuff.

So I am on the phone with HP again

Trying to find out if IPMI shared NIC mode featured in ILO will work over two bonded network interface cards, Shared NIC Mode should allow me to take the IP of the existing NIC's.

You ask why? Well, Zabbix IPMI support does not allow you to configure IPMI based on a separate IP address for a specific host it only allows your to use the IP from the Host.

Okay, that one should not reach me, it should have to do with the hardware and firmware, and not the Linux distribution. The first thing I'd wonder is whether the system model concerned even supports IPMI to the extent Zabbix requires.

I've briefly looked at zabbix-1.6/src/zabbix_server/poller/checks_ipmi.c and found that it handles multiple IP addresses adequately. Perhaps I don't understand what your problem with Zabbix is caused by.

The code clearly relies on OpenIPMI, and that should help.

I have installed OpenIPMI however my configuration issue is that when you specify a host to monitor within Zabbix and tick the option for IPMI you cannot specify the ILO modules IP address(Management Network Interface Address) Because of this I wish to use a feature within ILO called Shared Network which essentially takes the physical NICs and integrates them into ILO management ports.

As far as ILO features are concerned I believe the server in question HP DL160 has the required ILO features to utilise OpenIPMI support. *Fingers Crossed* I can see in ILO that the appropriate user permissions match Zabbix's requirements and I guess once it is enabled I need to copy the event/device codes into Zabbix.

What issues could arise when you load balance the network cards and run shared network mode with ILO? Will ILO be smart enough to manage the round robin bonding I have configured? What port with ILO run on? Have you had anyone try to implement such a configuration?

This is not correct. IPMI IP address is absolutely independent of the host IP address. It works fine with HP DLxxx and Sun hardware.

After more research your correct the HP iLO is able to share the onboard nic meaning it does not need to have an addition Cat5 connection to the network connected to the management port. However it cannot share the IP of the host operating system

Taken from the HP ProLiant DL160 Generation 5 Server Configuration Guide (Page 20)

Share NIC Mode Setting this value will prevent support from share NIC mode. The setting default value is Disabled.

(Do not want this one)Dedicated connection -

Access iLO 2 via an embedded 10/100 MB Ethernet NIC dedicated to iLO 2. This enables remote management over a dedicated, out-of-band management network. In-band SNMP notification of server problems on a real-time basis is also supported without separate telephone connections or modem sharing devices. The dedicated NIC can auto-select speeds between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps.

                  Shared Network Port -

On selected ProLiant server models, iLO 2 supports network connectivity through a new high-speed shared connection via one of the embedded system NICs. Shared network port provides full accessibility to all iLO 2 functions including browser, Virtual Media and Virtual KVM in graphic mode. iLO 2 maintains a unique IP address and MAC allowing the network controller to route iLO 2 and host data correctly. With the new Shared Network Port, out-of-band management and production data can share the same wire eliminating the separate network connection for each server.
So does anyone have any idea on how to configure a second ip address for the IPMI interface instead of using the IP address of the host defined within Zabbix?

Under hosts in Zabbix you add a host then you check the box for IPMI however you cannot define a second IP address for the host that the IPMI Management Interface is using, how do you get around this? Do you create a second HOST? Do you specify within IPMI Items the IP address of the Management Interface? Do you have any examples?

You may look at the Template_IMPI_Sun_something for an example.

i took a quick look at that template, but couldn't see how separate ip for ipmi interface should be specified neither in host properties, nor individual items.

I had the same problem as the initial poster but I was using --enable-static (just playing around really hehe) and that caused a problem with linking some devel libraries I wasn't willing to identify. Removed --enable-static and it works great. Static linking is probably best left to the agents anyway.

My fault. I have bad news. There is no IPMI IP in 1.6, so ZABBIX will use host IP address.

Good news is that it is already fixed in pre-1.6.1 code. Thanks for pointing to this issue.

No Worries, has the CSV been updated with this correction? If not do you know when the stable release is scheduled to be released?

you probably meant cvs, and still needed svn
according to svn logs, yes, it has been committed to svn

                                edit:
and i can confirm that the ipmi ip field is in the host configuration page (trunk revision 6090)
