Windows Agent 1.6.1 not compatible with Windows 2000?

We are unable to get the 1.6.1 Windows 32 agent to run in Windows 2000. Can't even get it to report the version number (zabbix_agentd.exe -v). We get the error:

zabbix_agentd.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point freeaddrinfo could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll.

Support for freeaddrinfo on earlier versions of Windows

The freeaddrinfo function was added to the Ws2_32.dll on Windows XP and later. To execute an application using this function on earlier versions of Windows (Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows Me/98/95), then you must include the Ws2tcpip.h file and also include the Wspiapi.h file. When the Wspiapi.h include file is added, the freeaddrinfo function is defined to the WspiapiFreeAddrInfo inline function in the Wspiapi.h file. At runtime, the WspiapiFreeAddrInfo function is implemented in such a way that if the Ws2_32.dll or the Wship6.dll (the file containing freeaddrinfo in the IPv6 Technology Preview for Windows 2000) does not include freeaddrinfo, then a version of freeaddrinfo is implemented inline based on code in the Wspiapi.h header file. This inline code will be used on older Windows platforms that do not natively support the freeaddrinfo function.

My company is experiencing the same issue on our Windows 2000 boxes. While we are trying to phase these systems out, it would be nice to keep monitoring them in the meantime.

We are still experiencing this issue and have not found a resolution. Currently we are simply leaving the Windows 2000 machines running the 1.4.5 agent, although it would be very nice if we could upgrade them.

I think I found the solution to this problem. As mentioned before we had the same problem. It occurs when I simply tried to replace the zabbix_agentd.exe file. When i went through whole procedure of stopping, uninstalling service and installing, starting the new one, everything seems to work correctly.

I tried uninstalling the service, then installing the 1.6.1 version and I still get the freeaddrinfo could not be located message. This is on Windows 2000, seems 1.6.1 still isn't compatible with 2000. Hopefully this is resolved soon, I've got 50+ Win2000 hosts I'd like to get on 1.6.1 but can't. I'm in the same boat as BrianK, we're trying to phase these machines out, but that won't be happening anytime soon and would really like to monitor them using the latest software.

This morning I attempted the uninstall and reinstall of the service with 1.6.2, unfortunately I'm getting the same error. The Pre-release testing section of the release announcement indicates the agent is tested on Windows 2000, I'm wondering if this is still the case and maybe there is a workaround or something we're doing to cause this error. Maybe Alexei could shed some light on this?

So far no solution in 1.6.2. I haven't tried the nightly builds so don't know what the status is with those. I did crack open the source a couple weeks ago and tried to see if I could implement a fix, but its a bit beyond my limited programming ability.

Here's hoping Windows 2000 support is restored soon.
