    Zabbix Server Monitoring

    Hi,
I have configured a Zabbix Server and am testing the functionality. The problem I face is I'm not able to monitor the Zabbix server itself. The agent file has been configured with the server's IP as 127.0.0.1. Even tried using the IP of the server but it does not work

The error generated in the server log is

14529:20090113:172239 Got empty string from [ZABBIX Server] IP [127.0.0.1] Parameter [agent.ping]
14529:20090113:172239 Assuming that agent dropped connection because of access permissions

I'm able to monitor other windows and linux server but not the zabbix server itself. Firewall rules allowing traffic to port 10050 & 10051 is configured

Assistance with this would be appreciated

Make sure you really restarted the agent.

Sometimes "/etc/init.d/zabbix_agentd stop" is not sufficient. Check with "ps aux | grep zabbix_agent" and then restart.

Done that too. But to no avail. I configure agent on the other servers and it works fine. But not on the zabbix server.

      Even with the firewall stopped.

Yes one more thing that i forgot to mention. When I try to telnet to 127.0.0.1 port 10050 it fails. Connection closed by foreign host

With 127.0.0.1 it didn't work for me, too. I had to use the IP address of the Zabbix Server to get it working...

Edit: Sorry, I've skipped that you've tried this already...

Tried using the server's IP in agent file.
Instead of monitoring the Zabbix server on 127.0.0.1 as configured by default i even tried the server's ip in the Zabbix interface. Even that does not work

Even re-installed zabbix. But yet wondering y i'm able to monitor other server while i'm not able to monitor only the zabbix server

What IP address is the Zabbix server listening on? In my setup it's listening on the external IP address, and not on all IP addresses (0.0.0.0). You can check this by using netstat.

The easy solution would probably just be to point the agent at the servers external IP address, which the Zabbix server is listening on.

sorry for the delaying in updating....
Even tried configuring Zabbix server to listen on the server ip rather than all ip / interfaces

but this also does not work. the same error

Does the loopback interface exist when you do ifconfig?

                    getting zabbix_agentd to work

Haven't seen this mentioned yet, had to change zabbix_agentd.conf:

                    Server=192.168.223.25,::ffff:127.0.0.1,127.0.0.1

I have added the IPV6 format, since v6 is enabled on the machine, and
                    it did fix the problem.
Check by doing a telnet on the localhost to 127.0.0.1:10050
                    and if it connects, type
                    agent.version

                    Should show something like:
                    # telnet localhost 10050
                    Trying 127.0.0.1...
                    Connected to localhost.
                    Escape character is '^]'.
                    agent.version
                    ZBXD1.5.4Connection closed by foreign host.

                    Good luck

yes adding the ipv6 format has done the trick. thanx for the assistance

You will have fun with IPv6 on Linux, I can tell you.
Sometimes apache will listen on the IPv6 port, only.
Sometimes the IP address for the ZABBIX-Server in the GUI must be set to ::1 (= 127.0.0.1 in IPv6 notation), etc.

We disabled it resp. did not use --enable-ipv6 during the configure run.

Another way is to "blacklist" ipv6 in the Linux system.

                        Regards

                        Norbert.
