Actions don't work as expected (v1.6.2)

I'm having some major problems with getting Zabbix to consistently send alerts. I've tracked the problem back to what appears to be that the zabbix-server isn't properly processing the action logic and isn't sending messages when it's supposed to.

What I'm looking for is any advice on things to check to find the source of the errors. I'm willing to dig into both the database and the source code. Please help me find this problem. It's preventing me from fully migrating all of my monitoring to zabbix.

I've narrowed it down to these scenarios:

    1. Zabbix will send to some users, but not others.

I have a few "system" user accounts that I want zabbix to send e-mails to distribution lists. Zabbix appears to send mail to "real" users, but not any of these other user accounts. I've even tried having both real and system user accounts in the same user group, then setting my action to send mail to the user group, and only the real users ever get mail. The events log shows that only the real users have actions even being generated.

    2. Escalations don't work.

I've set up escalations dozens of different ways. It basically comes down to, if the "enable escalations" box is checked, the action failes to generate any actions (e-mails).

    3. Overlapping actions don't work.

I've got a couple of actions that have overlapping conditions. For example, one action is "Trigger Severity > Average; send message to group A" and another action is "Application Foo; send message to group B".

However, for the events where these conditions overlap (i.e. > Average triggers in Application Foo), actions are not being generated for both groups. Instead, only one group gets the action (e-mail).

Not sure if this helps, but we are not aware of any problems with escalations and notifications in 1.6.2.

Note that Zabbix sends messages ONLY to users having read access to a host, which triggered this event.

Actually, that helps a lot. That was exactly my problem.

Once I added read-only permissions, the e-mail began flowing.

          Thanks!

I have exact the same problem.

When escalation of I get messages, when escalation on I get nothing.

Have been staring at it now for many many hours....

              Same problem here...

Action (Notification) works perfectly until i activate "enable escalations". I've spent much time on this problem now and can't see anything i've done wrong.

              Action:
              Name Notification_xy
              Event source Triggers
              Enable escalations checked
              Period (seconds) 60
              Default subject something
              Default message something
              Recovery message checked
              Recovery subject something
              Recovery message something
              Status Enabled

              Action conditions:
              Conditions (A) Host group = "HostGroup_xy"

              Action operations:
              Steps Details Period (sec) Delay
1 - 5 Send message to User "xy" 30 At moment

              Edit operation:
              Step From 1
              To 5
              Period 30
              Operation type Send message
              Send message to Single user
              Default message checked
              Conditions No conditions defined

Can anybody help solving this issue?

I am having a similar issue with 1.6.2.

Without escalations enabled on the action it sends the emails without an issue.

As soon as I activate escalations and press save they immediately don't work anymore. I would expect the default non-escalation config as a minimum configuration without the need to tweak any settings (ie steps 1-1 send an alert) when I select the escalation checkbox.

                Please help.

                  Not sure if it helps:

                  - The "escalation not working" probem occours on our migrated v1.4.6 -> v1.6.0 -> v1.6.1 -> v1.6.2 productive environment

                  - A quick'n dirty installation of plain v1.6.2 doesn't show the problem, everything works as expected

@nueuwhier + gazzerh: Are your installations also upgraded from a previous version?

I am having the same problem, even with "Enable escalations" not ticked.

                    I upgraded from 1.4.6 to 1.6.2

                      My problem got solved.

First I had to give Read or Read/write permissions for the hosts or host groups to the user that was supposed to receive notifications.

Once this was done still no notifications were sent.

                      I checked the zabbix_server.log and found errors like;

Query failed: [insert into alerts.... Unknown column 'triggerid' in 'field list' [1054]

Turned out I was still running server 1.4.5 binaries after my upgrade. Started 1.6.2 binaries and notification problem was solved.

                        ...problem solved, too.

GUI told me v1.6.2, but something gone wrong during the upgrade from 1.6.1 to 1.6.2, so zabbix_server was still 1.6.1. Aarrrgg...

Mine was an upgrade as well but how can it be fixed? The server was recompiled from source and a new frontend was used so the only thing that would break this is data related.

                          Any suggestions?

It would be great if this little bit of wisdom could be in the documentation. I've spent 4 hours trying to figure out why it was not working

Can you please include this in the documentation?

Please consider adding new condition "Trigger value" = "Problem" to make everything work. You do not want to have recovery events escalated, do you?
