Migrate Zabbix 1.1.4 to 1.6

Hello

I am looking for the right and best way to migrate a Zabbix 1.1.4 to 1.6.

For the new Zabbix 1.6 exists a new Ubuntu 8.04 Server. Now I will install the new Zabbix Version 1,6 on it. But how can I migrate the old database from the 1.1.4 Installation to the 1.6. I won't lose all my old server data.

If you have a small installation the I would start from scratch.

If its large, then run the schema update scripts from 1.1 to 1.4 and then from 1.4 to 1.6.

And test it on a backup db before,
you ll have an idea of the time it will take when using production db
it may be very long for table history for example.

Thank you for your answer.

The installation is to big that I can start from scratch. The main target is, I won't lose all the data that we have collected from our servers over the last 1.5 years.

The explanations in the user guide aren't really helpfully for me. My problem is, it's unclear for me how I should make the migration.

1. Can I directly install the Versioni 1.6 on the new Server?
2. Do you know wher I can find a step by step instruction for the migration?
3. Is it correct, I can't migrate directly from 1.1.4 to 1.6?
4. Where can I find the schema update scripts and how do I use this?

Yes, you can upgrade zabbix_server and GUI... The most sensitive part is upgrading the database. DB upgrade should be performed before you start zabbix_server and the GUI.

You should backup your DB and then restore it as "zabbix2" or whatever. Then run the SQL upgrade scripts on the copy and run the latest zabbix_server and GUI. That way you'll see whether things are OK and how long upgrading the database takes.

Well: test the whole process before screwing around on your production DB.

See page 30 and beyond in the PDF manual.

Always backup (or rename) everything [ DB + GUI/php files + config files + binaries ] before you start.

3. Is it correct, I can't migrate directly from 1.1.4 to 1.6?

DB: you should run the SQL upgrade scripts from 1.1.x to 1.4.x and the the scripts from 1.4.x to 1.6.x.

GUI, zabbix_server: no, you don't need to build/install version 1.4. You can directly go to version 1.6. You may have to tweak a few configuration params but they're essentially the same.

4. Where can I find the schema update scripts and how do I use this?

They're with the source code which means you have to download some 1.4.x tarball to get the upgrade scripts for 1.1-->1.4.

With success I have installed the new 1.6.4 Zabbix on my new Server and the monitoring of the localhost works fine. I restored the old Zabbix DB als zabbix2 and then I let run the SQL upgrade scripts from 1.1 to 1.4 to 1.6. No error was monitored on the screen, so I think all is fine. My last step was to change the DBName in zabbix_server.conf from zabbix to zabbix 2. When I restart the zabbix-server service I have the same GUI from the default installation of 1.6.4.

I think I miss the PHP GUI files but I don't know which files i must backup an restore that I see my old graphs in the new environment. Which files are missing and where can I find them on the old server?

you have to set db access parameters in the frontend configuration - frontend/config/zabbix.conf.php

that file probably has old settings.
