problem with graphs and vtext.php

Hi,
I just upgraded a 1.4 install to the latest 1.6 release on my prod monitoring box and after the upgrade none of the graphs or images load properly.

When you goto http://server/zabbix/vtext.php?text=hostname it displays "the image http://server/zabbix/vtext.php?text=hostname cannot be displayed becuase it contains errors."
I have checked all the logs and cant find anything wrong with the scipt.
I've checked phpinfo and gd/PNG is enabled.
I reverted back to the old vtext.php from the 1.4 install with no help.
I've upgrade php_gd and all of the php rpm's.

Anyone have any other ideas on how to fix this problem?
