    SNMP Devices

    Good Evening,

I am using zabbix 1.6.6 and not sure if it is a user error but i cant get snmp to pick up any of my devices.

I entered the community name and left the OID blank, i even created a new discovery where thats all it looked was for snmp v1 and v2. If i enable ping it does find the devices

Must of our devices either are procurve, printers or servers are the community names

    Thanks for the help

are you talking about snmp items or discovery only here ?
in any case, you must also populate oid field.

As far as I know, there's no auto-discovery for snmp devices, to find the parameter you want to monitor, go to the command line on your Zabbix server and type:
          snmpwalk -v1 -c <community string> <IP address of device>
          Where:
<community string> is the snmp community string on the device
<IP address> is the address of the device

You'll see a ton of info scrolling by if you have snmp set up correctly on the device, you can find the parameters in there and see what to put in the setup window in Zabbix. You don't have to use the numerical OID, just the name is fine, like ifInOctets1 to get bandwidth of interface 1 inbound.

          Good luck,
          Kerry

First make sure you have snmp enabled on the switch and have the community string set. Then, use snmpwalk to see what is available to monitor on the switch (see my earlier note).

To make it simple, if you're just learning Zabbix, just set up the host, then an item for the host, then a trigger for the item, then an alert for the trigger. Go to the configuration menu and work left to right. Don't feel bad, it took a while for the light to come on for me...

Set up the switch under Host, then go to Items and set up a ping to see if it's up or down. Select "simple checks" and under there pick icmpping. Go to Triggers and select the item for that host, since the only thing there is the icmpping, it will show up. Once you do it a few times it will start making sense.

Assuming you've already set up email for a user or group under "Media" you can then set up an action (alerts) for the trigger you just made. For this particular trigger, you need to test for 2 things - the trigger and the trigger value. The trigger will be the trigger you set up for the item earlier, the trigger value needs to equal "problem". This means if the trigger is active (ping response =0) AND the trigger value is "Problem", then send the alert. You can set up the notification on the right side of the action window but you need to have the users/groups set up first.

              Hope that helps!
              Kerry

well, there's auto discovery for snmp devices, but not for oids/parameters

How would i discover all devices with the C-public? I want to discover all devices to make sure i am not missing anything - how do i know what OID to use?

I am able to add the device in as a host then add it to my custom templete that right now gives me a ping, system name, system location and system description

I have tested tons of network monitors out there from the free ones to the ones that cost over 25k and by far i am having alot of fun with this one - if i learn this system it will be a powerfull asset to our company

Also i would like to thank everyone for there help

for discovery it is best to use widely known oid, for example, SNMPv2-MIB::sysDescr.0

note that this won't start monitoring those hosts. to do that automatically, you must have template created with items (with correct snmp oids), triggers, graphs configured. then you must create action that adds discovered hosts and links them to the template.

but first get the discovery working and picking up your snmp hosts

I would use a template generator to get started.

                          Zabbix template questions

I am using Zabbix to monitor Cisco devices, but there is one question about Zabbix template.

                          The context is as following:

I used SNMP dynamic indexes to get related information.

                          While retrieving interface incoming/outgoing traffic,
                          IF-MIB::ifOutOctets["index","ifDescr","eth0"]

                          But there is problem:

Different devices have different interfaces, so how to create one general template including some general information: CPU , Memory, and dynamic interface incoming / outgoing traffic against different ports on different devices?

In other words, how to automatically probe interfaces used on different devices dynamically?

In my opinion, zabbix template is just collection of items.

I would really appreciate it if you could give me some comments. Thanks in advanced!

That's pretty much exactly what a template is.

                              Dear Troffasky,

Many thanks for your quickly reply!
But how to implement what I said ?

I can write script to snmpget different interface OID on different devices, but there will be each one template against every one device separately. There will many template for many devices. I think it is not good way

Dear expers, I wonder if you give me some suggestions about it. Thanks so much!
