Zabbix getting delayed to send Email & SMS Alerts

Hi,

Till friday, my Zabbix was working perfectly without any issues. Today, I found an issue like the mail and sms alerts generated are getting delayed by a period of 1 hour and more. This issue seems started on saturday. I found that there was an hour/more delay to reach the SMTP server. From there it takes a minute or two to get queued & delivered. If we think in an angle, that the issue might be due to SMTP load, why it is does not send the sms on time? I don know why this has happened and How to solve this.

which version of zabbix ?

Nothing remains changed in server log. In dashboard, am able to see "In progress" status for the devices. From the time of configuration, I have not seen this status. Version is 1.6.4.

Still the problem persists and I am not able to trace the cause for it. I have disabled all the actions and enabled a test action. I found that, when an issue comes in single, it is working. When issues are coming in bulk, it moves to "In Progress". ie., takes time to get delivered.

No, grey listing is not there. In such a case also, it should work for the sms right?

are sms messages being sent over direct modem connection ?
when you tried with the single action, did it use only single media type or multiple ?
if it used multiple, could you try with email only ?

No not with Direct modem. First I tried with single media type (EMAIL). Then I tried with Multiple (SMS also). I have tried that already, same is happening. I am receiving the alerts but its getting delayed. The alerts are getting pooled and delivered slowly.

I am really wondering since it has worked without any problem for the past 7 months with email & sms alerts sent correctly. But what would have happened to the system now?

wait, so how _are_ you sending those sms messages if not using a modem ?
ideally you should try a very simple test to determine which system causes the problem here - single action, single media that executes custom alertscript which simply outputs time & message to some file.
if that is delayed as well, we know it's zabbix. if that works, it's most likely remote server, network or something.

Sms are sent thro' a script. As you said, I have wrote seperate scripts to interact with DB & send alerts. SMS are working fine while Mail is taking bit time.

well, this does look like a problem with the mailserver.
could you check mailserver logs, when does zabbix connect and what response does it get ?

You are 100% correct Mr. Rich. There was some policy setting in Mail server which delayed the zabbix alerts. Now, the Mail server has been changed and alert services got to their form immediately.
