Error receiving initial string from SMTP server

Thanks for your patience in helping newbies in both Linux and Zabbix.

I setup the Zabbix and it can send email thru my Domino SMTP server but when I switch it to my Linux Sendmail, error "Error receiving initial string from SMTP server" appears.

BTW, my sendmail seems fine since I can send mail thru OE or just using telnet command.

    Any suggestion?

When you connect to the SMTP server using telnet, do you see any welcome string? After how many seconds the welcome string appears? ZABBIX expects to see a welcome message for 10 seconds and give up, if SMTP server does not send a message back...

It looks for me as problem with DNS resolution of incoming connections.

      Same thing...

I am having the same problem. I was able to telnet to my SMTP server however it did take longer than 10sec for the welcome message to appear. Is there a way for me to change zabbix's wait time or is this a change that needs to be made on the smtp server?

      Thank you

Please, don't try to walk around problems, it'll get only worser in the long run.

If your smtp server needs more then 10s to reply there's got to be something wrong. Try to nail down the delay and fix it. You'll be glad you did it because you solved 2 problems at the same time.

I understand... Do you have any idea of what could be causing such a delay. I'm not sure where to start looking. These email alerts are the only thing I am stuck on.

          Thank you,

Edit: Dang my delay is almost 90 seconds. *sigh*
