Cannot add macro to host template

I'm trying to add a macro to my generic host template in 1.8 for the SSH port.

Whenever I try to add the macro to the template I just get the error, "Wrong macro : SSHPORT"

What does this mean? Can I not add a macro to a template? The manual seems to hint that it's OK:

In other words, if a macro does not exist for a host, Zabbix will try to find it in host templates.
I also get the same error when trying to add a macro to a host.

Please use {$SSHPORT} instead of SSHPORT. Note that the special syntax has to be used for all user-defined macros.

      Thanks Alexei,

I thought it was just when using the macros that the syntax had to be used.

      Cheers,
