Setting application for template linked with another that has the same applications

I have this issue:

I have a host which is linked to 2 templates. My generic Windows template and a generic VM template (which adds some items specific to virtual machines).

I want to update the Application name for the items in the VM template to coincide with the Windows template. But when I try to do this I get an error:

Application 'OS' already exists in linked hosts

When editing an item for the VM template there are no Application names listed (only -None-).

Any ideas? Is this a bug?
