General problems after updating 1.6.4 -> 1.8.3

I am experiencing problems after updating Zabbix 1.6.4 to 1.8.3:

When I try to add a template, I get following error message:

Circular link can not be created

I am not sure how to check where the error can be. Maybe someone has an idea...

same issue with 1.6.6 -> 1.8.4 upgrade

I have this same problem after upgrading from 1.6.6 to 1.8.4. I can't link any template to any host, even newly created hosts. The templates don't have any templates linked to them so it can't be circular. I'm thinking there must be invalid data in the database somewhere but I'm not sure what to check for consistency.

found the problem

A template (template 1) had a template (template 2) linked to it that was also linked to hosts that had template 1 linked to it. The key here for troubleshooting is that these hosts and templates were completely unrelated to the hosts & templates I was working with when receiving the "circular link" error. The link (pun intended) wasn't obvious at all but I'm glad it's resolved now.
