    Can't access the webinterface anymore

    Hi,

    In my internship I got the assignment to inspect network monitoring tools, choose the best and make it work. I have choosen Zabbix and I believe its the right decission but my lack of skill with Linux is threathening my internship.

    I had a Zabbix running with some items (external ping script) and triggers configured. Data was coming in, nice. But the dates where off 2 hours. Googled a bit and changed the date.timezone to date.timezone = Europe/Brussels in /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini. At weblogin I get a message that i propably had miswritten smt. Tried date.timezone = Europe/Amsterdam. This appeared to work for a while.

    Next day i turn my pc (64 bit quad core) back on and time was wrong on the server. Also time in webserver was wrong and bigger problem, different from servertime. When i synchronized time to ntp server, time was off by two hours. At this point I removed ntp making my mentor fell of his chair (sort of speaking).

    I know he is right, I agree that its not done but none the less I was happy to see that my clock remained stable.

    By this time somewhere along the road I find myself totally not capable of accessing the webinterface. In the /var/log/apache2/error.log I find message with: exit signal Segmentation fault (11). I think something is going wrong with php or/and Apache but I dont know what or how.

    If anyone can shine some light it would very much appreciated.

    Greetings

      Finish what I started

      Im not the type to stop when i'm in the middle of it. Even if I have to struggle untill the last day, I won't stop. No effort is for nothing, I learned alot about Linux already with this assignment. Finding another job, perhaps but first I finish this as good as possible. And if you have some helpfull input it is still welcome.

        First of all, learning "linux|unix" is not somekind type of training such as MS SQL server 2008 courses. If you just begin with linux, then you cant expect , that in some reserved assingment time, you could be able to running such a different sw like web server, sql server and very advanced monitoring tools. Yea...there on internet you can find zillinon "copy kiddies(copy&paste from online tutorials)" which they make of themselves linux gurus etc. and they will claim to you, that you could manage linux after few hours with google. Well thats not gonna happen. I working with linux&bsd nearly 12y and Im still just a beginner. So if I see somebody want to manage such a task in few days or weeks Im a little bit suprise and horrified.
        Otherwise Segmentation fault (11) in apache...probably bad configuration of apache or php.
        For testing purpose you can and you should use image for virtual machine on download page and not to laborate with something, that you can hardly resolv without some expirience and in limited time.

          Timezone issue solved (Virtualbox)

          The timezone issue has beel solved. The problem was a checkmark in virtualbox configuration > system > hwclock in utc time. This was the reason why time was 2 hours in the past. Time was presented as raw utc time and timezone specific values where not added. To be clear the checkmark was one, turning it off solved it.

          Now its time to address the segmentation fault (11) error messages. The problem is presenting itself in the virtual image from the zabbix website intended to try out Zabbix. Versions: Apache/2.2.13 (Linux/Suse) & PHP 5.3.2 and just in case, MySQL 5.1.36 (Suse RPM).

          If I solve it in a week, you'll hear it.

              Exit signal segmentation fault 11 in Apache/error_log Solved

              Of course that was a possibility but than there was the risk the error would pop up again after a while.

              I could not access my frontend anymore because of the segmentation error. The problem was solved by editing the php.ini file

              Edit the line:

              register_long_arrays = Off

              to

              register_long_arrays = On

              Hopes this helps anyone, sure did help me.
